Otilla's Miracle Transformation

Updated: Sep 12, 2022

This Miracle Pup's story is almost impossible to believe. From unable to move her back legs and walk on day one, and on the brink of death, to her ability to not only walk, but run and play, Otilla's story is an inspiring story of how rescue can change a life.

Ottila's story is an absolute miracle. This poor girl was so frail and her life seemed hopeless when we found her. She couldn’t move her back legs at all and dragged them behind her. Ottila - or Tillie as we lovingly call her - was found living on a chain attached to a tree in south Texas.

Tillie was almost 5 when we rescued her and due to the cruelty of her living situation, Tillie was on the brink of death. Unable to use her back legs, she dragged her feet behind her and waited under that tree. She had no access to food or water. She had suffered severe neglect.

We knew we had to step in and help this poor girl. She was paralyzed and overheated… her temperature was 103.7 when she arrived at the vet. We had blood work, x-rays and an exam done immediately. She was slightly anemic, her white count is low and she was very dehydrated. The medical team thought that Ottila’s paralysis could be from a tick bite. She arrived with ticks on her ears, but the tests came back negative. Finally, the conclusion from the vet was that she had ingested too much bird poop living outside and as a result, a fungus attached itself to her spine and she would never walk again.

See Ottila struggle to walk day 1 in this heartbreaking video:

She had a long and uncertain road of recovering from the cruelty she had endured. But thanks to a loving foster home, Tillie had a chance to live a happy life.

Since being rescued by Dallas Dog, and receiving much needed medical care and the love that she deserves, Tillie is thriving.

With her foster family, she was able to trust humans and even befriend their family dog.

Tara, Dallas Dog Foster Mom to Otilla explains, "After a month of co-existing, they started playing with each other Thanksgiving morning!"

Come Christmas, Tillie stood up and tried to take a step or two and then fell. Tillie's foster parents were amazed! Over the next few weeks, a couple steps became many, and then she was running. Tara describes Ottila: "She is now a normal dog. We think her medication, love, and watching our dog Arthur helped her re-learn how to walk."

She used to motor around with wheels, but not any more! Dallas Dog was able to rehabilitate her back to full health and Tillie is thriving! She now runs all over the house and backyard in her foster home. Her miracle is that she is a normal dog living a happy go lucky life. All she needs now? A forever home and a family to call her own.

Tillie is a total love bug. Her love of humans is strong, and with proper introductions and role-setting, she wouldn't mind a fur brother or sister to tumble around with too!

Tillie loves every human being she comes across – she assumes you want to be her best friend. She is potty-trained and crate-trained and would make a great addition to a family with older children who can keep up with her energy. Can you blame her? She used to drag her back legs around the house and now she's leaping off and on the couch! She's ready to go!

We are a rescue that pushes the boundaries and rarely accepts "NO" as an answer! We are sometimes criticized for our willingness to help the underdog. We don’t give up, and we stop at nothing to reach our goals.

She lived her life tied to a tree on a chain that was too short. She developed a fungus infection on her spine that affected her ability to walk. We were told that she would likely never walk again that the damage might be not be reversible. That did not stop us or her fosters who worked non-stop on her walking again.

She is running, not walking, and continues to make such incredible progress.
