Harold is a 2-year Puppy Mill survivor. His story began when we rescued him in June of 2020. He is a purebred Frenchie purchased for $7,000 at a Petland in Dallas, Texas.
Shortly after he was purchased, the owner realized he had some serious medical conditions that caused him to develop pneumonia and stop walking after a couple of weeks. After confronting the pet store with this fact, they blamed her for his ill-health and stated that he was fine before.
Without the funds to finance Harold’s medical expenses, she reached out to the rescue for support. We talked about options of her keeping him and helping with the surgery, but she agreed to surrender knowing at this time the care was more than she could manage. The President Patti Dawson took him into her home to foster and soon thereafter, she took him to the vet. There, he was diagnosed with a degenerative disorder called Kyphosis - defined by back arching/abdomen tucking which often suggests gastrointestinal distress. Since then, he has also been diagnosed with megaesophagus, hydrocephalus, and an enlarged palate. Despite these diagnoses, Harold lives a good quality life, but does require special care.
Harold requires hand feeding 3 times a day in an upright position. We call this time "meatball time" because we make his food into tiny flat meatballs, making it easier to eat. He requires daily medical care, such as pills and injectable medication. Harold is completely paralyzed from the bottom of the neck down, so he is incontinent and needs medication and help expressing his bladder. He is not able to drink water on his own, so he receives daily sub-q injections.
Harold is a long-term medical foster with Dallas Dog Rescue Rehab Reform. He has an amazing group of supporters and has also become a mascot for the rescue. Harold also has a volunteer position in the rescue; he handles all of the fosters’ complaints. He can be quite snarky in his responses and goes by Sir Harold bringing many smiles to those that follow his journey.
Harold is an example of the horrors of puppy mill operations, where irresponsible breeding produces dogs with major issues all for profit. Fortunately, Dallas Dog saved this little fellow from euthanasia. He now lives a comfortable life being spoiled and having all of his needs met. Harold’s Mission is to bring awareness to Puppy Mills and Retail Puppy Stores. He is a spokesman against irresponsible breeding and ending the sale of puppies from puppy mill breeding.
He is quite the little dude that packs a serious attitude. He loves exploring, getting carted around in his stroller, and befriending new fosters. Harold’s story isn’t the first or the last. His story is WHY we continue to do what we do and work to change the animal welfare laws across Texas. Because of him, we are working extensively towards passing Humane Pet Store Ordinances across the entire state.
Harold reminds us to #adoptdontshop.. Harold reminds us not to support backyard breeders… and finally Harold reminds us that #fosteringsaveslives

Welcome to Harold's Critic Corner!
Harold is purebred Frenchie. Originally purchased from a Dallas Petland (that thrives on the exploitation of dogs in puppy mills) for $7,000. Shortly after he was bought, the owner realized he had some serious medical conditions when he stopped walking! She reached out to the pet store and they said she must have dropped him and that he was fine. She was told by the vet that he needed immediate surgery. She was not able to afford that after the large payment of buying him just weeks prior. She reached out to our rescue to surrender, and Dallas Dog took him in. He will forever live as a foster in the rescue and receive all the medical care he needs. He will not live a full life however he will live the best life. Harold has been diagnosed with Kyphosis, megaesophagus, hydrocephalus and an enlarged palate.
He requires quite the daily medical ritual. Hand feedings 3 times a day in an upright position. We call this time "meatball time" because we make his food into tiny flat meatballs, making it easier to eat. He requires daily medicals from pills and injectable medication. Harold is completely paralyzed from the bottom of the neck down so he is incontinent and needs medication and help expressing his bladder. He is not able or won’t drink water on his own so he receives daily sub-q injections. Harold is almost two years old. You may wonder how could this happen? Harold is an example of the horrors of puppy mill operations where irresponsible breeding produces dogs with major issues all for profit.
Fortunately, Dallas Dog saved this little fellow from euthanasia. He now lives a comfortable life being spoiled and having all of his needs met. Harold is a spokesman for standing against irresponsible breeding and ending the sale of puppies from irresponsible puppy mill breeding. He also is quite the sassy frenchie and love to boss his foster mom around. He has a big personality for such a little guy!
Harold adores his foster mom and he is extremely attached to her! He is also lucky because his foster mom is the President of the rescue. He is quite the little dude that packs a serious attitude. He loves exploring, getting carted in his stroller, and befriending new fosters. He is quite the fighter too. He has already had a 10 day stay at the ER with pneumonia. The vet said he would not likely survive another bad case. We have to be very careful and watch when he is eating due to his regerg, he could stop breathing and has to be rushed to the ER! He usually bounces back quickly and is back to handling his complaint department for the rescue.
Harold’s story isn’t the first or last. His story is WHY we continue to do what we do and work to change the animal welfare laws across Texas.
